1957 Ranch Home Gets New Alcoa Vinyl Siding

Built in 1957, this single family home was converted to a duplex with a basement apartment some time ago. The exterior remained with soft siding on the lower elevations and wood board and batten from the window sills up on the front and back and board and batten in the gables. This home was in need of a face lift. The owners just wanted to replace the windows on the front and south side. The contractor for the window replacement called me for the siding job. Replacing the old metal frame windows entailed the removal of the old siding from around the openings, so when I started the job some of the old siding was already removed where the new windows were replaced. I finished the siding tear off, leaving the 1/2 plywood in the gables and just removing the battens. The back of the home was like a jungle, this is common with rental units, the siding contractor turns into the landscaper.

This is a typical 1957 built home compared to today’s standards I call this well built. All solid sheathing with T&G 1×6 and covered with heavy tar paper, not like the 15# felt paper we see today. The old soft siding came off the wall pretty easy, and stayed mostly intact with not that much of a mess.

After the tear off, I installed 1/2in. Tuff-R insulated sheathing with a Tyveck type air infiltration product. This made for a good foundation for the installation of the Alcoa vinyl siding. Prior to installing the starter strip for the first siding coarse, I made a cap to close off the bottom, from the foundation wall to the Tuff-R. This eliminates any exposure to the sill plate, existing wood sheathing and insulation, it also helps eliminating air infiltration at the sill area.

The owner selected the Alcoa, double four profile, in classic cream. I installed Alcoa vinyl soffit with custom bent PVC aluminum fascia in white. The finished job turned out great, with the owner of this property very satisfied.
